Top Shelf Reverendine

The drink that inspires Top Shelf Reverendine is Benedictine which has it's origins in the Normandy area of France at the abbey of Fecamp. It was first created by a Venetian monk by the name of Dom Bernardo Vincelli from 27 secret herbs and spices. The drink was the preferred tipple of King Francois the First and was produced in the palace by the Benedictine monks until the end of the 18th Century when it was nearly lost forever in the tumultuous French revolution. The 16th century manuscript containing the recipe was purchased by a Fecamp notable in 1791. Not knowing the value within the manuscript it was put away in his library where it stayed until 1863. At that time Alexandre Le Grand came across the manuscript of spells and determined to decipher and recreate the secret recipe. His tenacity finally enabled him to do this and he modernized the recipe and named it Benedictine. The Liqueur became very popular and production reached some 150,000 bottles by 1873. In 1876 Alexandre started up his own company and founded his manufacturing in the purpose built Benedictine Palace. It is in this palace- museum that Benedictine is still made today and is well worth a visit during any stay in Normandy. Benedictine was known as an elixir and was often taken after a large meal to aid indigestion. Drink

over ice in a brand balloon.
