How The Still Spirits "Turbo 500" "T500" works

Distillation is the basis of separation based on boiling points, purely for example, water has a boiling point of 100°C, ethanol (alcohol) has a boiling point of ~78°C and methanol ~65°C. In a gas (steam) form these chemical substances can exceed this temperature in the right conditions, but will return to liquid when they come back down below their boiling points.

The new T500 Reflux condenser works on the principles of ceiling temperatures, where through its intelligent design it prevents chemical substance above a certain boiling point being processed. Unlike other reflux condensers on the market the T500 works with a focus on the water flow and controlling the temperature of the water flow out. Assuming that the temperature of the water flow is stable, it is able to create a ceiling threshold temperature based on the water flow out. So effectively, If you are looking at collecting a product of a boiling point of ~78°C, water flow out would be set just to collect everything up to this temperature, then prevent any other products with a boiling point above ~78°C up the reflux and into the condenser.

This technology break through was only developed through the redesigning of the contemporary reflux, designed to make distillation easier with hassle free operation. It’s designed to set and forget as it operates until exhaustion, requiring simple initial setup with water flow and turning off once distillation is complete.

Still Spirits T500 - Instructional Video 1 - Mixing wash ingredients

Please note:

  • Ingredient wash has been upgraded since video production, we recommend the 6KG Still Spirits Triple Distill Production Pack
  • Mixing of wash does not require the yeast to be stirred, much easier to get the volume into a swirl vortex and sprinkle yeast on top

Cost of final product

This will vary depending on what you are making in terms of whiskey or liqueurs, also the varying qualities available. But working on the highest quality and most recommended blend of ingredients you are looking at approximately $12 per the bottle which is equivalent to a $50+ triple distilled commercial grade alcohol bought from your everyday liquor outlet. Higher and lower alcohol quality grades can be achieved, but there is a sliding scale quality for quantity.

This figure has been fully aggravated to consider all aspects of cleaning, fermenting, distilling and blending of your drink.

Please factor in costs of legal ownership costs where applicable, further information on this please consult the link in product footer disclaimer

Looking more detailed at ingredients

The use of premium ingredients will not only increase the quality of the end product, but will increase the ease of use of the distillation products. Providing you use very high quality ingredients (like the 6kg triple distilled production pack) there is no need to discard the first 50mls that is associated with other stills, as these yeasts produce one tenth of the metho and impurities during initial fermentation. Thus, any remaining impurities will be removed with the combination of the high % T500 reflux and the still spirits carbon filtration system.

It should be noted that a reflux will only increase the concentration not change quality the product is, high quality product in equals high quality out. Low quality yeasts and sugars can create compounds that produce undesired substances that have very close boiling points to the ~78°C in addition to high levels of metho ~65°C that can carry across and can fool the reading equipment used to test % of product. Spirit Hydrometers work on density and are only accurate when measuring pure spirit and water.

Product Yield

The amount of final product produce will vary depending on the ingredients used, based on the Still Spirits Specs that can be found on the Still Spirits Yeast Information Website

Product once diluted to drinkable 40%

Still Spirits Classic 8kg Production Pack produces ~9.5L @ 40%

Still Spirits Triple Distill 6kg Production Pack produces ~3.2 @ 93% - ~8L @ 40%

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to come in store, email or call the showroom during business hours.

Please note we have an emphasis on quality, as there is little point to make the cheap alternative when you can make the best alternative with less effort. With this in mind, we do not like sorting problems caused by poor quality products sourced elsewhere or our speciality service and information exploited.

Recommended Associated Products:

  • Alcobase Spirit Beginner Kit (fermenting, testing and filtration equipment)
  • 6kg Still Spirits Triple Distilled Production Pack
  • 5L glass bottle with flip top
  • 1.125L spirit bottles alternative to the 700ml bottles

PLEASE NOTE: Product quality is controlled by five critical elements;

  • Yeast and ingredients (sugars & clearing agents) - Triple Distill Turbo Yeast being the best, Classic Turbo Yeast the most Reliable, secondly the types of sugars that you feed the yeast, weather Dextrose or turbo sugars will change the yield and quality, specs can be found at the still spirits website http://www.stillspirits.com/wawcs016161/ln-turbo-yeast-system.html
  • Distillation % & purity (high percentage will not mean high purity)
  • Carbon filtration - http://www.onestopbarshop.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=1399
  • Flavour blending (noting that some are food flavourings and some are infusing which will improve with age)
  • Natural aging of the spirit
